CALENDAR NOTE 1 / YILAN CITY

Yilan City Nightlife

Old-town bars, Dongmen Night Market and Jimmy Square — the old county seat after dark. Yilan City is the slow-burning night of the Lanyang Plain. Dongmen Night Market fires up at dusk; when the stalls wind down, small bars hidden in old-town lanes take over, whisky aged down the road at the old Yilan Distillery. Frequent rain glazes the streets — locals just call it atmosphere.

FAQ

N-01What is there to do in Yilan City at night?

Two main threads — eat your way through Dongmen Night Market, then duck into the old-town lanes for small bars. Yilan City has few bars but they have character, hidden in old houses around Jiucheng S Rd and Zhongshan Rd, with a lit-up stroll past Jimmy Square tying the night together.

N-02How late does Dongmen Night Market run?

Most stalls open at dusk and fold around midnight, a bit later on weekends. Arrive before nine for the full lineup; after midnight only stragglers remain — head to a convenience store or over to Luodong for round two.

N-03Can I manage without a car?

Completely. Station, bus terminal, night market and old-town sights all sit within one walk — the rare Yilan district that works car-free. After drinks, taxis and designated drivers are easy, and Jiaoxi or Luodong lodging is a short ride away.

N-04What budget for a night out here?

Around NT$200 fills you up at the night market; old-town cocktails run NT$300-400 a glass. NT$800-1,200 covers a comfortable full evening — far looser than Taipei.

N-05What about rainy nights?

Rain is daily life in Yilan. Parts of the night market are covered, and the old-town bars and distillery halls are indoors. Bring an umbrella — bar nights are best in the rain anyway.

N-06Is it safe late at night?

The old town keeps a steady flow into midnight and stays uncomplicated. Streets quiet down fast after that; lanes dim late, so stick to main roads or just call a cab.
