Start with the common misunderstanding.
People searching for bars in Yilan usually picture a single strip. That does not exist here. Yilan’s bars form four clusters that never touch each other, twenty to forty minutes apart by car. Choosing the wrong one does not mean bad drinks — it means the wrong mood entirely.
Yilan City: one giant, and the quiet ones behind it
In the Yilan City bar list, 新買醉餐酒館 on Fuxing Rd Sec. 2 carries over thirteen thousand reviews — the loudest name in the county. Busy, crowded, bistro-leaning. If you came to talk, skip it.
For quiet, walk into the old town: 芎城餐酒Town bistro on Jiucheng N Rd, Gambling Bar on Shennong Rd Sec. 1, and 威佬 威士忌會所 Whisky Fogey Club on Nyuzhong Rd Sec. 3. Cocktails run NT$300-400. TRA Yilan Station puts you in the old town in five to ten minutes on foot — the only district in Yilan you can drink in without a car.
Jiaoxi: the “bars” are mostly izakaya
Different logic here. Most signs reading bar in this part of Jiaoxi sit over izakaya — 林北烤好串燒居酒屋 and 一酔居酒屋 on Wenquan Rd, COZZZY BAR and 西江水坊 Tea & Cocktail Bar on Deyang Rd. You walk over from the baths, which is exactly how Jiaoxi nights are built.
The cost is tourist pricing, usually ten to twenty percent above Yilan City, plus a weekend wait. Weekdays are a different town.
Luodong: the local room, next to the station
Luodong concentrates its bars on Zhandong Rd and Zhongzheng N Rd. The Roof 190 星空酒吧 sits on a rooftop on Zhandong Rd, 藍調酒館 Blues&Jazz 酒吧 on Zhongzheng N Rd, and DCC Draft Cocktail&Cafe - 羅東那間紅色酒吧 on Xingdong Rd. All are minutes from the station and minutes from the night market.
Luodong’s real advantage is that it catches the second half — when the market folds, this ring is still lit.
Toucheng and Yuanshan: go, but not as the main event
Toucheng’s Qingyun Rd Sec. 3 area holds a few izakaya-style rooms such as Kanea廚房-餐酒小館, and a sea breeze you get nowhere else in Yilan. In Yuanshan, 吉姆老爹啤酒工場 Jim & Dad’s Brewing Company carries sixteen hundred reviews and makes a good daytime finish.
Plainly though, both areas go to bed. After nine there is no second round nearby and no cab to flag. Sort the ride home before you go.
Choosing a district comes down to three things
Where you sleep, whether you want to walk, and whether you want quiet or noise. Sleep in Jiaoxi, drink in Jiaoxi. Sleep in Luodong, drink in Luodong. Cross-district hopping just burns an hour of driving.
One last practical note: there is no metro in Yilan and the last buses run early. Drink, then call a car or book a designated driver. Line up the late-night food and the ride home in the same breath.
