Conclusion first: Su’ao is a dinner-hour town.
That is not a flaw, it is a schedule. Follow the harbor’s rhythm and Su’ao gives you the best seafood in Yilan. Follow a city rhythm and you will find yourself standing on a Nanfang’ao street at nine with nowhere to go.
Why nine is the wall
Because boats do not wait. Nanfang’ao is a working fishing base, and the timing of landings and departures sets the hours for the entire street — people who rise early do not run midnight businesses. Seafood houses peak between six and eight, start closing the woks by half past eight, run marginally later on weekends, and never to ten.
There is no waiting this out. It simply works this way.
So what is the right plan
Arrive in Su’ao at dusk: sea first, dinner second. The bridge lights and the Nanfang’ao Lookout both work best before the sky goes fully dark. Sit down around half past six, budget NT$400-800 a head, and order what came in today rather than what is on the menu year-round.
Then — this is the point — go north after nine. Luodong is about thirty minutes, Jiaoxi about forty, and both have a complete second half. Luodong’s outer ring holds past midnight; Jiaoxi’s massage street runs to one or two in the morning. Plan Su’ao as the meal and put the late round somewhere else. It is the honest itinerary and the easy one.
The cold spring is a daytime thing
Many people assume the cold spring is an evening activity. It is the most common misunderstanding here. Su’ao’s cold spring sits at roughly 22 degrees — a summer cool-down by nature — and the park and surrounding bathhouses mostly close by evening. Sitting in 22-degree water after dark is not romantic. It is just cold.
For a night soak, drive to Jiaoxi. Forty minutes buys an entirely different temperature and an entirely different closing time.
What is left for those who stay
If you are sleeping in Su’ao and would rather not drive out, the options exist — just not many. The town’s two bars are Kao Bar on Taiping Rd and Su’ao Xingqi 8 TV Pub on Sudong Middle Rd: small rooms, mostly local faces. 瓏山林蘇澳冷熱泉度假飯店 on Zhongyuan Rd keeps its cold and hot springs and its spa in-house, so guests never step out. 慧鴻整骨推拿 on Fude Rd is the practical answer when you just want the knots gone.
If you drink, arrange a designated driver or book a taxi in advance. Su’ao’s issue was never safety — it is that after nine there are no people and no passing cars, and flagging one down takes a very long time.
Su’ao is worth the trip. What is worth it is those three hours at dusk, not the whole evening. Get that distinction right and you will run this town better than most visitors do.
