Driving into Wujie at eight in the evening expecting an old street, and finding an empty car park instead. It is the single most common misplanned stop in Yilan.
What you actually see at eight at night
A locked gate, and wind coming off the Dongshan River.
Chuanyi Old Street is not a roadside street you can wander into. It sits inside the National Center for Traditional Arts in Yilan, on Wubin Rd Sec. 2 in Wujie Township, on the lower Dongshan River across from Qinshui Park. The park keeps daytime hours, closing in the early evening; the exact times and last entry shift with the season and with whatever is programmed, so check the official announcement.
Park closes, street closes. No exceptions, no side entrance.
So why does everyone expect a night market
Three reasons.
First, Qinshui Park across the river hosts the Children’s Folklore Festival each July and August, and some of that runs after dark — different venue, different thing. Second, the words “old street” call up Jiufen or Shenkeng, places that get busier after sunset; Chuanyi works the opposite way. Third, most photos in search results were taken during the lit hour before closing, which reads like a night shot but is not one.
The right way: afternoon in, dusk out
Treat it as an afternoon block.
Allow two to three hours and count backwards from the day’s posted closing time — entering between one and three is the comfortable window. That gets you the street houses, the performances, and the best light of the day without hurrying. People who arrive forty minutes before closing generally see a third of it, for the same ticket price.
One more thing: food inside the park is limited and shuts with the park. Do not pin dinner on it.
Three routes out
Back to Luodong, about 15 minutes. The reliable one. The Luodong night market rings Zhongshan Park, stalls running from dusk to around midnight, with the famous stands best hit before ten. To Jiaoxi, about 35 minutes. Right if you are soaking or staying at a hot-spring inn that night. Jiaoxi’s bathhouses mostly run to 11 pm or midnight, and foot-massage shops often to 1 or 2 am — the only genuinely late stretch in the county.
To Yilan City, about 25 minutes. Dongmen Night Market sits around Shenghou St and Hemu Rd, smaller than Luodong, and you want to arrive before nine for the full spread. The upside is that the old-town bars are within walking distance.
As for staying in Wujie — there are plenty of guesthouses, but very little food nearby after dark. Sort dinner before you book.
Settle the car question first
There is no railway station near the park.
The nearest gateway is Luodong Station, then a bus or taxi; buses are sparse and stop early, so do not count on them after dusk. You will not flag down a cab out here late at night, so book by app in advance or have your accommodation call one.
